If you have intermediate Photoshop knowledge, the Iron Man movie titling effect is not hard to create. This step-by-step guide will demonstrate a few simple tricks that simulate the look of the Iron Man text.

PHOTOSHOP TUTORIAL
Prerequisite Photoshop skills:
create, move, merge, rename, hide and change the blending mode and opacity of layers
A) Create a Photoshop work file with the dimensions you need:
Mode: RBG
Dimensions: (this example is 585 x 200 pixels)
Background: white
B) Using the Paint Bucket tool, fill the background layer that with a creamy brown (R: 125 G: 90 B: 57).

C) Add Noise 70%, Uniform, Monochromatic.

D) Add Motion Blur, Angle 45°, distance 57.

STEP 2: Create a sand texture
A) Create
a new layer with an image of a sand texture, scale it to taste and pump up the levels
a bit.

B) Adjust
the sand layer to overlay with Opacity of 20%. Then, merge the two layers.

C) Scale
the layer to taste (enlarged here about 200%).

D) Adjust
the RBG levels to taste. In this example, levels are adjusted to 40, 1.16, 255.

E) Apply
Unsharp Mask, 33% with a Radius of 6.8 and Threshold of 0.

Step 3) Create the text mask
A) In Illustrator, use IronHero Outline, scale, then convert the text to
paths and ungroup all lines. Select the interior lines and import into
Photoshop to create a mask.

B) Back
in Photoshop, apply the mask to the texture layer.

Step 4) Addtext highlights and shadows
A) Paint
cream highlights, some ruddy areas and a few random shaded areas.

B) Add a
layer of white highlights, mottled areas and splotches. Opacity 26%.

C) Create
a layer and paint shadows for the lower left side of the letters. Opacity
64%.

Step 5) Create beveled lettering effects
A) Return to Illustrator and import the outline vectors into a new Photoshop layer
to create the outlines with a transparent background. Lock the pixels.

B) Using
your artistic talent in Photoshop, paint this new layer with shadows,
highlights and midtones to create the look in Figure 16.

C) If you
turn on all your layers, you should have this:

D) Back
in Illustrator, select the interior text paths and expand them to taste
to get a nice thin outline. Import this into Photoshop, lock the pixels,
fill with gold, then put a bevel on it. Adjust this new layer to 36%.

Step 6) Add rock textures and imperfections
A) Create
a new layer with an image of a rock texture, apply a mask to trim out the outside
of the letters. Set the layer to Overlay with an Opacity of 36%.

B) Create
a new layer with an image of meteoritic rock. Position the image so that interesting rock highlights are seen at the bottom. Apply the same mask you used in Step 17. Erase a portion
of the layer as in the example below. Then, set the layer to Color Dodge
with an Opacity of 62%.

C) Create
a new layer with an image of rock with large crystals. Apply the mask
you created in Step 9. Then set the layer to Overlay with an Opacity of
12%.

Step 7) Adding a glow
A) Create
a new layer and fill with orange. Apply the mask you used in
Step 6A. The, set the layer to Overlay with an opacity of 63%.
