Pittsford Musicals commissioned this poster artwork for its 2009 production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel. This design was created as part of a full set of promotional materials.
Carousel was ground breaking for its time, addressing darker themes such as domestic violence, that had never been presented in musical theater. Intertwined with these serious issues is the theme of hope.
These themes are reflected in the design. The figure of the horse broods as it touches upon the surface of the Atlantic. A lighthouse is accompanied by a single star to symbolize the hopeful elements in the story. The artwork presents these ideas with a gold and blue color palette and a fine level of artistic detail.
