David Occhino DesignHocus Pocus Tutorial by David Occhino

This is David Occhino from David Occhino Design and I'd like to share some cool ways to get that Hocus Pocus font to look like the example above.

So, here are the steps in Illustrator and Photoshop that will get you there. I am assuming that you know your way around Illustrator and Photoshop, and know how to do the following:

Let's get started.

1) First, you'll need the Hocus Pocus font. Install the font and then create a Photoshop file with the dimensions you'll need, then fill that with black. Then, using the text tool, use the "Hocus Pocus Titles" font to write out the text. To add a lightning bolt to a capital letter, highlight the letter and then change the font style to "Hocus Pocus Titles Alternate:"

2) In this next step, you'll apply a bevel to each of these layers so that it looks as if the letters are being illuminated by an unknown light source near the center of the letters.

Rasterize the text, and then copy the layer so that you have two copies of the layer. Then, find an area near the middle and delete everything to the right of this area in the top layer. In the bottom layer, delete everything to the left of the center. In this example, "Hocus" is on one layer and "Pocus" is on another layer.

3) Apply a style to the top layer: Bevel and Emboss. Be sure to use these settings:

You should now have this:

4) Apply a the Bevel and Emboss style to the bottom layer now, but be sure to change the angle:

bevel

And now you'll have this:

5) Merge the two layers and adjust the contrast to taste:

6) Using your the paintbrush and other tools you may need, add some scratches, pits, highlights and other distressed features that you might want. If you don't want a weathered look, skip this step:

7) Create a new layer under the text, and add your desired background. If you'd like to use the background I created, download it here.

8) If you'd like to add a colored gradient that shows up in the letters, select the text layer and apply a Gradient Overlay using these settings:

With this new setting, your artwork will look like this:
